Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a treatment that allows us to correct defects in the positioning of our teeth, in the relation upper and lower arches and in the position of the jaw. Even though many people see orthodontics as a mainly aesthetic treatment, it has many therapeutic applications that will improve the health of your mouth.

Orthodontics require time, but the results are spectacular and they will last forever. A mouth corrected with orthodontics is easier to clean, wears down slower and is overall healthier.

Even though the ideal moments for orthodontics are childhood and adolescence, it is never too late for taking advantage of the benefits this treatment has to offer, orthodontics treatment can be performed in adults without problem.

Frequently asked questions

How does orthodontics work?

In general terms, orthodontics involves the usage of constant, small forces to change the position of elements in our mouth. There are different orthodontics devices available for this purpose.

What are the options in orthodontic treatment?

Metallic brackets

They are the most common option. This type of orthodontics consists in fixing small anchor points called brackets to the surface of the teeth which are bonded together by a tensor cable. This system allows us to generate a slight traction force that can change both position and orientation of teeth little by little.

Metallic brackets are a versatile, efficient and economic treatment option that is suitable for the vast majority of orthodontic treatments.

Ceramic and aesthetic brackets

Functionally identical to metallic brackets. The difference is in the material they are made of, that aims to blend with the natural colour of our teeth. This treatment option offers all the advantages of conventional brackets but is much more discrete.

Lingual Orthodontics

The main characteristic of this treatment option is that the anchor points are situated on the back of the teeth and are completely concealed by them. They are the least visible brackets available.

Invisalign

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment option that replaces brackets with a series of transparent aligners. They consist of thin, transparent, plastic splints that are worn over the teeth. They are custom made for you, and have a slight misalignment that causes the movement we are looking for.

Invisalign aligners can be removed for eating and cleaning. As their name indicates, the plastic they are made of is completely transparent and virtually invisible over your natural teeth.

How long does an orthodontic treatment lasts?

Depends on the case. Usually, it takes between one and two years. If you want your treatment to be as quick as possible, it is crucial that you closely follow all our indications.

Before beginning any orthodontic treatment, you will receive a precise estimate of the treatment time.

Once finished, the “retention phase” begins in order to prevent your teeth from moving back into their original position. Normally it entails the use of a night splint.

What is the best age for orthodontics?

Any time is appropriate. In ideal conditions, it is preferable to start during adolescence, after we have developed all our adult teeth.

However, there are options for all ages:

Children orthodontics

It is focused on correcting early development problems of teeth and jaw. Children orthodontics aims to correct the physiology of the mouth to avoid much more complex problems in adulthood.

Young orthodontics

In between 12 and 18 years old it is the perfect age for tackling problems of alignment, malposition and crowding.

Adult orthodontics

Quick, aesthetic or invisible orthodontics are specially thought for the adult patient, who wants to improve his mouth with a discrete treatment option.
